What is a frenectomy?

A frenectomy is a minor surgical procedure that removes or modifies a small fold of tissue called a frenum — typically located under the tongue (lingual frenum) or inside the upper or lower lip (labial frenum). When this tissue is too tight, thick, or restrictive, it can interfere with normal oral function, leading to issues such as difficulty with speech, eating, or proper dental development. In infants, a tight frenum can even make breastfeeding challenging. A frenectomy helps to release this tension, improving comfort and function.

Frenectomies are quick, safe, and commonly performed procedures, often completed in a single visit using local anesthesia or laser technology for minimal discomfort and faster healing. Whether performed for medical, functional, or orthodontic reasons, a frenectomy can significantly enhance oral mobility and overall oral health. Our team will carefully assess whether this procedure is right for you or your child, and we are committed to providing the highest level of care throughout every step of the process.
